No More Politics As Usual In The 6th District (Update In The Comments)

I was elected Chair of the Salem Republican Committee in the Spring of 2008. When I was elected, the Republican Party was coming off multiple consecutive years of getting destroyed at the ballot box and failing to get our message through to voters. Our brand was at an all time low and there was serious fear among some that the end of our once great Party was now in sight. Some of our wounds were self-inflicted, some were due to the cyclical nature of politics and some were due to outside forces.

On the day I was elected, I was said it was a great day to be a Republican. People looked at me like I was crazy. The fact was though, I saw an opportunity. We had a chance to redefine ourselves by getting back to our basic conservative principles, refocusing on what mattered and getting back to addressing the problems facing our Nation. We had spent too long with internal bickering and finger pointing and I genuinely believed we were about to begin our resurgence.

That same attitude is why I'm running for 6th District Chair and why I'll be running completely on my record. Others will play the politics as usual game of name calling, labelling and tearing people down - which is exactly what destroyed our brand in the first place. I won't participate. The internal attacks have already begun but we're going to rise above them. The fact is, we're going to show the voters of the 6th how we can translate some of our local successes to the District wide level. We're going to show them that they can demand something better than politics as usual. They can demand real leadership.

In 2 years in Salem we have:

  • Increased our membership over 2,000%.
  • Raised and spent thousands of dollars in support of conservative causes/candidates while still maintaining a record surplus.
  • Set record numbers in recent elections and increased our average margin versus the statewide average by several points.
  • Put in place an election day infrastructure that actually resulted in TOO MANY volunteers; allowing me to spend a portion of the last two election days working the polls in neighboring jurisdictions.
  • Fostered a genuine sense of camaraderie among the local units.
  • Planned, scheduled and hosted the largest AG Debate of the 2009 Primary.
  • Won Statewide Unit Chair of the Year in 2008 (from Frederick's RPV).
  • Won 6th District Unit Chair of the Year in 2009 (from Mullins' RPV).
  • Created an award winning blog and embraced all forms of traditional, new and social media.
  • Provided pro bono legal representation to Republican candidates and committees regarding fundraising, election law and recounts.

Those successes aren't about me, they're about a group of people who embraced leadership over politics as usual. You won't hear me calling names or placing labels on my opponents. What you'll get from me is a proven record, an open dialogue on what matters to Republicans in the 6th District and a willingness to do the hard work that will make the 6th District Committee relevant again.

If you have any questions about my record or where I stand on the issues, don't hesitate to email.

This race isn't about me. It's about finding the best leader to take us forward. Whether that person is me or not, I want this race to be a positive opportunity for growth for us all and I hope you'll demand that type of campaign from me and whoever else runs. And to anyone who wants to name call and tear down, tell them you're tired of politics as usual - it's time for some real leadership.

I stumbled across some coverage of this race on another blog and I left some thoughts there. I thought it would be useful to cross post my thoughts here as well so a cut and paste of that comment is in the comments below. I think it's the 12th Comment.

What a refreshing statement. Perhaps this bad period for conservatives is on the wane.

There are some VERY specific issues I want to see addressed in the 6th District then on to state and federal offices.

Will there be an opportunity for discussing such questions prior to the convention so we can fully KNOW who we are voting for?

Great statement. Most conservatives, including myself are tired of "politics as usual" and want to see specific issues addressed.

Anon 9:51 - Thanks for the comment. I certainly hope all convention delegates will get to know the candidates. I plan to attend events in every jurisdiction that will allow me. I already have a bunch scheduled. I've also invited everyone to email me or call me ((540) 983-9351) if they'd like to discuss anything with me. Whether I'm the ultimate choice or not, it's imperative that the choice be an informed one.

Anon 9:59 - Thanks. As I said right above, I'm always open to discussing specifics. Let me take it a step further, anyone who uses labels and name calling rather than open dialogue is probably trying to mislead you or conceal the truth. You won't get that from me. I look forward to the conversations to come.

The Republican Party should adhere to "traditional" conservative principles of appropriately limited government (taxation; regulation); strong on national security; strong on control of borders combined with more realistic "guest worker" and immigration laws and enforcement; strong on personal liberty and opportunity. We should limit government "welfare" (it creates a culture of "entitlement" and "dependency" along with fraud and abuse). More effective "help" can be provided locally by individuals, churches, non-profits. . .

We must encourage economic development by reducing unnecessary regulatory burdens and taxation -- provide long term confidence that government will play appropriate, consistant role. Would not hurt for us to promote the "Fair Tax" !!

We should encourage education reform that emphasizes the role of those with a "gift" for teaching and minimizes the role of "programs", "systems", "policies", "initiatives", and superfluous bureaucracy (we should explore creating boards at all levels that are more independent of the "professional class" -- our boards have been effectively coopted by them). We should teach our history (not revisionist), our unique founding as a republic that derives its authority from the people and that the people derive their inalienable rights from God and not from the government. We must have higher expectations of our young to help them achieve their potential within the areas in which they are gifted. We must not continue to downgrade our emphasis on mathematics, science, technology for a broader range of our youth.

We need to appeal to both those who identify themselves as conservative and to those who identify themselves as "independent" or "moderate". Allow them to remain independent, but create the reasons for them to support the Party -- principles, integrity, effective.

Unlike our past, we must not succumb to the truth that power corrupts and that "absolute power corrupts absolutely".

Other than some of these concerns, I guess we can keep on keeping on in the same old ways and continue to expect different and better results!

I hope you are a legit conservative and only support candidates that are constitutional and obey the supreme law of the country! It seams that Republicans and Democrats became so out of touch with the roots and foundations of this country that it is no secret we are in a vortex sucking us down. The bankers elite have being busy working on the diminish of freedoms and liberties put in place UN, the Education dept, CFR and many other organizations in place to confuse and miss lead the patriots astray! It is TIME to take responsibility for our selves and become familiar with the constitution and what it represents things will change when we as individuals change and take our place in the process. I am looking forward to be a help to the Republican Party as long as candidates will follow the party platform. McCain is a democrat liberal not much difference then bush and all work for the Obamas masters

Thank you for taking the time to put in writing your refreshing persepctive. What a blessing!

I pray in faith, believing that your refreshing perspective will be a chain reaction with every committee and every committee member.

I stand on God's word from Mark 9:23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

Mark 10:27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible , but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

Luke 1:37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

There are several other scriptures confirming God is able!! If anyone is interested to know them please let me know and I will gladly share them with you.

But for now Brother Greg, be encouraged and keep the faith remembering
1 Corinthians 2:5
That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

God' power is limitless!!!

Thanking God for you.

Do you have an opponent now?

Greg Habeeb said...

The usual suspects have made their opposition to my candidacy known but we'd expect nothing less. No formal opponent announced yet although I'm expecting at least one, probably more. Again, it's why I'm not yet asking for endorsements. Not fair to ask when the field isn't even set.

Greg you need to reconsider this whole playing fair thing. The other side certainly won't!

Thanks for your coverage of the 6th District Chair race. I look forward to your continued comments which I'm sure will be constructive and fair.

I also must wholeheartedly agree with you that the last thing we need is someone looking to feed their ego or build their resume. We need a 6th District Chair who is willing to do the behind the scenes grunt work just as we've done in Salem and you've done in Roanoke County and elsewhere.

Ultimately, the 6th District needs someone who will continue to build our Party, advance our conservative cause and unite our people. What we need is a leader. If the voters believe I'm the one, I hope they'll support me. If they don't, then they shouldn't.

However people end up voting, I am telling everyone to not endorse anyone until the field is set. This isn't about who is first or loudest, it's about who is best.

I appreciate your interest in informing the voters in the 6th so I'm sure you won't mind me linking to my most recent thoughts. Thanks again for your interest and coverage.
