Mike Wray to announce for 17th HOD

On Thursday April 2nd at 12:30pm Mike Wray will announce his candidacy for the 17th district of the House of Delegates seat. He will announce in front of the Roanoke County Administrative building.

Gwen Mason Needs To Take Her Head Out Of The Sand

Last night Gwen Mason spoke to a "community meeting" (aka - group of liberals hanging out talking about what other industries to nationalize). Besides her bizarre comment that the 17th District was a "microwaved cheese doodle," one other comment really caught my attention.

According to Ms. Mason, Roanoke's economy is "fairly recession proof." Oh really? Has she not looked at her OWN budget where the city is millions of dollars in the hole? How about the school budget, seen that Ms. Mason? Does she know that unemployment in Roanoke has jumped 60% in less than 6 months? Has she talked to a realtor lately about the state of the housing market in Roanoke?

Look, I don't want to talk down Roanoke and its economy. I love Roanoke and believe our potential is unlimited. However, Ms. Mason's blindness to the issues facing our great city/area is one of the reasons the local budgets are unmitigated disasters. Until Ms. Mason pulls her head out of the sand and realizes we face the same economic challenges as everyone else, the city she governs will continue to fall further and further behind. It's time for Ms. Mason to be honest with the voters and to take ownership of the fiscal mess she and her liberal cohorts in Roanoke City government have created.

Card Check

I'll let this speak for itself.

Liberal In Moderate's Clothing Gwen Mason Proves Once Again How Out Of Touch She Is

Folks, this race has just begun and the hits just keep coming with the Mason campaign. First, Mason embraced the extreme liberal 36% of the 17th District in her desperate bid for media attention. Now, she and her campaign are stepping in it with every hunter in the 17th (a sizeable group).

Just go to her homepage and check out the picture she chose for her welcome page (for those of you who don't want to go to her homepage, I've posted the picture below). If you're not a hunter, you'll notice some beautiful pastural land. If you're a hunter though, one thing will jump out at you. POSTED. I bet Mason doesn't even know what that means.

Either she has no idea what it means (proving again she's completely out of touch with her district) or she knows what it means (and she's making a bizarre political statement). Either way, it's another bad move for a campaign that is already proving to be as embarrassing as Mr. Rasoul's. Sadly this is just the beginning. It's going to be a fun few months.

Troy Bird to run as a Republican against Ware

See Bird's bio below:

Troy Bird, 26, is an 11 year resident of the Roanoke Valley. He is a husband of almost 9 years and the father of three daughters. The oldest of three siblings, Bird was homeschooled for all but three months of his elementary and high school years. His parents traveled around the United States as home missionaries, doing evangelistic work and working to promote unity between denominations. Carrying on the philosophy that he was taught by his parents, that “Life is a classroom”, Bird considers education as being very important and has made it a point to continue studying on his own.

Aside from being a graphic designer, author, lyricist, composer and musician, Bird’s varied background includes being an Advanced-Ace-III certified Contract Disaster Housing Inspector (accepting deployments under contract to FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security through PaRR Inspections to disasters in Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana over the last several years); serving as the Associate Pastor of a local inner-city ministry for three years; and serving five weeks each in Brazil (1995) and Papua New Guinea (2008) with New Tribes Missions as a short-term missionary.

A self-described “Average Joe”, Bird has also held “normal” jobs that include reading water meters, delivering Chinese food downtown Roanoke, working as a contractor, and working through the local temp agencies to provide for his family.

While some may consider his varied background and lack of a business or law degree a disadvantage, Bird disagrees. “I can relate to many of the people in District 11. And they can relate to me. I understand the issues that they are facing on a day-to-day basis, because I’ve faced them myself. I know what it’s like to have to rely on food stamps, because, even with my wife and me both working, we couldn’t make ends meet. I’ve faced the humiliation of being evicted and ending up at the Rescue Mission with my wife and children. The fact is that Roanoke is full of the ‘Working Poor’. That group of people who are working, yet can’t make ends meet. Those one and two wage-earner families who are still ending up in foreclosure… who still can’t afford to keep the heat on in the winter. I have a passion to turn that around. I was taught long ago that ‘Facts are subject to change’, and once I am elected I will work tirelessly to make sure that those facts do change.

The Roanoke Times Editorial Board Gets It

In today's paper the editorial board of the Roanoke Times wrote about how bad the Card Check legislation is for both companies and employees. The GOP and Bob McDonnell certainly agrees that preventing a secret ballot when creating a union is a terrible idea. A secret ballot is afforded to all citizens when voting on elected politicians why should it not be afforded to workers? In addition these employees need information from both sides to make a decision and this legislation will seriously hamper the flow of information.

Most citizens of Virginia agree with this and now the RT editorial board agrees.

You know who has yet to take a stand? Virginia House of Delegates Democrats, All 3 Democrat Candidates for Governor,Senator Warner, and Senator Webb. Is not taking a stand the leadership you want?

I ask you to write these legislators and encourage them to take a stand on this issue. The state people will tell you it is a federal issue, but it is important as voters to understand where all leaders are on this.

2009 Reagan Dinner was a HUGE SUCCESS

First let me thank all of you who attended the Reagan Dinner last night. Your support made this event a huge success.

There are a lot of reasons to be excited to be a Republican, and these were highlighted last night.

1- In 2008 the Reagan Dinner had 88 people. In 2009 we had 190 people.

2- Delegate Registration for the Convention in May is up significantly. In 2008 Roanoke City sent 11 delegates this year we will send 93. Both Salem and Roanoke County have similar successes if not more.

3- George Allen inspired the crowd and gave great energy to the nights events. I don't know about you but I smell a rematch.

4- William Fralin will be missed, but the strength of the candidates in the 17th is very impressive and I am sure we will hold the seat.

5- Congressman Bob Goodlatte is a hard working and honest representative of the 6th district. I could not think of a better person to fight the liberal pork filled spending plans of Pelosi, Reid, and Obama in Washington. I am happy that we will continue to send him to Washington as long as he wants to go.

6- House Majority leader Morgan Griffith is not only a great leader for his district, but he is the perfect guy to lead our efforts this November. His talk at the end of the evening really stirred the crowd up. After 2 hours of speeches to have the crowd that energized was very impressive. It was clear from the crowds reactions that the tactics of Kaine and Obama have inspired real concern in the mind of voters.

7- All the AG candidates gave energized talks last night that inspired the group. No matter who our nominee is for Attorney General we can rest assured we will send a quality, principled person to Richmond.

8- Even though Bob McDonnell and Bill Bolling could not make it into Roanoke last night, the crowd was energized by their candidacies. They are focused on the right issue....JOBS. Dave Foster brought a sign that I thought was great last night it read "BOB'S FOR JOBS". This is the most relevant issue for these times. The people of Virginia know that the GOP has the ideas to encourage real economic growth. While the Dems believe you create jobs by taxing jobs, we understand that taxing jobs kills job creation.

In summary the party is growing very rapidly. We are seeing a lot of people who have always been a Republican become more active and we are seeing a lot of independents with an Obama hang over joining the party. It is time to get involved in your local committee and talk to your friends and family about the momentum and candidates the party is putting up this November.

Change We Can Believe In?

Gwen Mason Turns Her Back On 63% Of The 17th District

"Liberal in moderate's clothing" Gwen Mason is embracing the extreme liberal 36% of the 17th District who supported fringe candidate Sam Rasoul in his ridiculous race against Congressman Bob Goodlatte.

For those who have forgotten, 6th District Democrats made the bizarre decision to run a complete fringe candidate against our well respected, liked and accomplished Congressman, Bob Goodlatte. Not surprisingly, Rasoul's fringe liberal agenda was rejected by over 60% of the voters.

Rasoul received only 36% of the vote in the 17th District. Obviously, any smart politician would run away from him as fast as she could, right? Not Gwen Mason. You'll hear Gwen Mason talk a lot about being a moderate but ask yourself this - why is she appearing at press conferences with a fringe candidate like Sam Rasoul and why is she embracing his support by posting his picture prominently on her website?

The Answer - She's one of the 36%. She's one of the far left fringe who puts partisan politics ahead of good governance and supports someone like Rasoul over Bob Goodlatte. We'll have a lot more to say about Ms. Mason over the next few months. Thankfully, if the start to her campaign is any indication, she'll be giving us plenty of material.
A picture is worth a thousand words (or in this case - a picture is worth 36% of the vote)

5 Way Primary And The Importance Of Being First

Mason Adams has two more stories in this morning's paper about the race in the 17th. Covering announcements has got be getting exhausting (and, frankly, boring). Pretty soon the real campaign will begin and that'll be the fun part. Comparing the positions of these great candidates against Gwen Mason's radical liberalism is going to be a lot of fun.

Chris Head's Official Announcement

I was able to make it to Chris Head's official announcement this afternoon. Frankly, I think Chris gave just about a perfect speech. Highlighted not only his plans to create jobs but his actual experience doing so. Chris also talked a lot about the regional nature of this seat as the only seat to cover Roanoke County, Roanoke City and Botetourt. Attendance was good and the event was well planned (with good fruit which I helped myself to). Mark Lucas, himself once a potential candidate, introduced Chris and gave him his support.

It is becoming more and more clear that we will have a top tier candidate as our nominee come June. This is especially exciting because the Dems are going to nominate about the most liberal out of touch politician they have on their team and one who brings enormous baggage. This fall is going to be a lot of fun.

More Media Coverage Of The 17th

As you can see below, Chris Head is now officially in the race bringing the number up to 5. Personally, I think this is incredibly healthy for our Party to have a vigorous Debate, pick the best candidate and unite to defeat the extreme liberal the Dems are going to nominate.

Click here for Mason Adams' Roanoke Times article from today about the race and learn a little more about Chris Head.

The First 2 filings are in!

Today at Noon started the filing period for the 17th House of Delegates Republican primary. Bill Cleaveland and Josh Johnson were the first to file, both at noon today. This is not a process that comes without work so it shows the level of effort and organization these campaigns have already put forth. The field looks to be 5 or 6 strong so stay tuned for more filing updates.

5 Candidates' Names Are Now Public

Folks, we've been holding some names back so the candidates could control their own announcements. Well, as of now, it looks like the 5 names we've been hearing are all public so here goes. Melvin Williams, Josh Johnson, Bill Cleaveland, Mike Wray and Mark Lucas (click here for the WDBJ7 story with all names). Very good field and, as we've said all along, we'll have a great candidate and should handily defeat whoever the Dems serve up.

Josh Johnson Announcement Video

Thanks to Valerie Garner and the Roanoke Free Press for covering this announcement and posting this video. Not sure if she caught it all but this should give you a taste of Josh's announcement.

Mike Wray Is Officially In The Race

As we've been saying for awhile, the field in the 17th is likely to end up at 5 (maybe 6) candidates. Mike Wray has confirmed his candidacy to the Roanoke Times and WSLS so we can now post. We'll have much more about Mike as this goes forward. Expect to hear at least 1 more name very shortly.

Josh Johnson - "The Reagan Conservative" - Roanoke Free Press On Johnson Announcement

Valerie Garner from the Roanoke Free Press was at Josh Johnson's announcement today and she already has a story up. Click here to read it. "Reagan Conservative" certainly isn't a bad label for Josh to pick up. I'm also hearing that this will be the week where 2 or 3 more candidates will officially join the race. Stay tuned.

Josh Johnson's Formal Announcement

Josh Johnson made his formal announcement for his Delegate candidacy this morning at the Roanoke Regional Airport. Josh picked this location because of the regional business focus of his campaign. Great turnout. Always good to see local leaders like David Carson at these events. All of the local media was there so I expect we'll see some coverage tonight and tomorrow. I'm hoping to make it to the all of the other coming announcements to support these great candidates who are putting their names out there.

It's clear that Josh is a 100% conservative who wants to focus on the "kitchen table" issues that really impact peoples' lives. It looks like he'll be a very interesting candidate and his campaign hires (former Ralph Smith and William Fralin staffers) show that he's making a real run at this thing. Looking forward to following this race closely and I'm confident we'll come out of this primary with a top notch nominee.

Douglas Walker to seek Commissioner of Revenue Nomination

The Roanoke City GOP has been informed that Douglas Walker will seek the nomination of the GOP for the Roanoke City Commissioner of Revenue. Douglas will formally announce his intent later this month. The mass meeting to select the nominee will be May 12th. Douglas has already been working hard and I am going to post his bio below, his platform will be coming soon:
__________________________________________________
Douglas Fleet Walker was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on June 12, 1976. Shortly after his birth, his parents James Roger Walker and Nancy Forsyth Walker moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. Two years later the family moved again, this time to Philadelphia. Douglas still has a soft spot for the “City of Brotherly Love”, just last year, Douglas attended game five of the World Series to watch the Phillies win the city’s first championship in over 20 years.

Douglas’s father, James, purchased a business in 1988 and moved the family back to Lynchburg, Virginia, where both Mr. & Mrs. Walker are originally from. While the family’s home base continues to be in Lynchburg, Douglas has lived in the Roanoke Valley for the past 5 years.

Douglas attended the University of Virginia where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1999. Douglas accepted a job with the E&J Gallo Winery’s Management Development Program in October of 1998, and immediately after graduation moved to Hampton NH to begin his career. He began as a Sales Representative and was quickly promoted to the Assistant District Manager in Montgomery County Maryland, and finally, District Manager, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Douglas moved to Munich, Germany in January 2002 where he would live for the next 8 months. He studied at BMW’s dealer school, where he completed extensive training in accounting, management, sales and customer service. Douglas returned to Lynchburg in August of 2002 and began his career with The Hammersley Group.

Douglas’ duties at Hammersley began in the Parts Department. His effectiveness proven quickly, Douglas was promoted the Finance Manager at the Roanoke location. The Finance Manager position led Douglas to the Sales Manager position, then the General Sales Manager, and ultimately he was promoted General Manager. The Hammersley Group sold to Crossroads on October 1, 2008; after working with Crossroads through their transition, Douglas ended his career in the automotive industry to pursue his interest in public service.

Douglas met his future wife Brittany shortly after moving back to Lynchburg from Munich. Douglas and Brittany were engaged February 2, 2003. A native of St. Simons Island GA, the idea of a beach wedding appealed to Brittany, and they were married in Nags Head NC on October 9, 2004. Brittany attended Hollins University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Political Science.

Douglas has an older brother, James Jr, who lives in San Francisco and an older Sister Katherine, who lives in Columbus, OH. Douglas and Brittany do not have any children, but do have two dogs that keep them busy. Cayman is three-year-old Rat Terrier and Cisi is a 6-month-old Boxer. When time permits Douglas enjoys golf, off-shore fishing and traveling. Considering his background in wine, he and his wife are avid wine collectors and also enjoy cooking.

Johnson Announcement Set for Wednesday

Josh Johnson will formally announce his candidacy for the GOP nomination for the House of Delegates on Wednesday. The announcement will be at 11am at the Roanoke Regional Airport in the board room.

Josh Johnson For Delegate - 17th HOD

Folks, as I'm sure you've heard by now, things are getting hot and heavy in the 17th for the Republicans. We are now likely to have as many as 6 candidates running in the primary. While it's not my district, I have been following this race closely and hope you'll do the same.

There may come a time when I "pick a side" in this primary but not yet. As such, I will try to post as much of the news coverage as possible. You probably already know by now that Josh Johnson is running. We expect a formal announcement from him this week, probably Wednesday. In the meantime, below are links to some coverage to date of Josh's candidacy.

Josh Johnson for Delegate website

Roanoke Times story

WSLS story

Disclaimer - Josh is an attorney at my firm (Gentry Locke). Like most of the other candidates who have or will be announcing, I know Josh and think highly of him. Let me repeat though, I have not, and may not, take a position in this race. Right now we're just putting out the information as it comes in.

17th House of Delegates Decision

First let me thank all of you who have encouraged me to run for the House of Delegates seat vacated by William Fralin. After serious consideration I have decided not to seek the nomination for the House of Delegates.

In my evaluation of this position I found it in the best interest of my family and the party that I sit this race out. For those of you who do not know, I have a 4 year old and 2 year old daughter and my wife and I both work at Shenandoah Life. Given that Shenandoah Life is in state receivership it brought a certain level of uncertainty to our lives that we felt would be complicated by my run for the House. My wife and I agreed that if the party could not find a qualified candidate for this seat that we would go through another round of evaluation. With the announcements of Josh Johnson, Melvin Williams, and the other candidates still going through the evaluation process, I am sure the party will have a strong candidate and I am confident that we will retain the seat. Additionally, we have a Sheriff and Commissioner of Revenue race this year that we plan to win.

We have built a strong party in the City and I think it is best that I stay in my role as Chairman of the City GOP to help provide support to all candidates during this critical election season. When I started as Chairman our strategy was to build the party then find qualified candidates and win elections. We have been highly successful building the party and momentum in the city, now it is time to finish the plan.

I am also the Legislative Chairman for the House of Delegates district and I have to certify all candidate documents for the primary by April 15th. Given my position I will be assisting all candidates on administrative issues and evaluating each of them personally. If I determine that one candidate is better for the district I will personally endorse that candidate after April 15th. Additionally, I will post information about each candidate on our blog and send e-mails from the campaigns.

Again I thank you all for your support and I look forward to an exciting election season.

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Who is Melvin Williams?

First let me make a disclosure: I am the Legislative District Chairman and until my duties end on April 15th I will not be endorsing any candidate if I endorse at all. With that being said I am going to use our blog to give you information about all the candidates for the 17th House of Delegates race. Below is a bio piece sent to me by Melvin Williams. He is the first candidate to announce for the GOP and I expect to see anywhere from 2 to 4 more jump in this race. The good news is that they are all qualified so stay tuned.

Sorry But The ACC Tournament Takes Priority Over Blogging...

...and work for that matter. Not that anyone really waits anxiously for our next blog post over here but, just in case someone was checking, I'll be Atlanta for the next several days at the ACC Tournament and won't be blogging. I expect we'll hear more on the 17th HOD race while I'm gone so hopefully Adam will be able to chime in. In the meantime - GO DEACS AND GO HOKIES.

Salem Sets Convention Delegate Record - Another Win For Brownlee?

Last night was Salem's Mass Meeting to elect Delegates to the 2009 RPV Convention. Once again we packed the Salem Courthouse (time to look for a new location). More exciting than that though was the number of Delegates who signed up. Last year Salem took 6 delegates to the Convention. This year we have 85+ signed up.

Let's put this in perspective, Salem only gets 44 Delegate votes. This is the equivalent of Fairfax County registering 2,500 Delegates. If every other Unit in Virginia takes twice as many Delegates as they have votes, we're going to have to move this Convention to a football stadium.

As for who "won" the Delegate count, I can't give a precise answer. What I do know is that the Brownlee people personally delivered more than 20 Delegates, Cuccinelli folks personally delivered about 10 Delegates (handwritten on a crumpled up piece of paper) and Foster didn't deliver any Delegates. Adding in the other "committed" folks I'm aware of I'd say Brownlee has at least 50% of the Salem Delegates and Cuccinelli probably has +/- 15% of the Delegates. The remaining 35% are either undecided or have not indicated their preference.

Having said all that, I suppose you can call that a "win" for Brownlee in the Delegate registration race. Now let's see who actually shows up in Richmond.

Update - Since some folks have asked, I believe (although can't confirm 100%) that Salem's delegation will be unanimously supporting Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling in his re-election bid.

Update 2 - Forgot to mention that our Committee membership is now up to almost 110. That's good (up from about 10) but it's a long ways from where we want to be. If you're a Salem Republican who wants to get involved, please email me.

Bill Bolling on Card Check Legislation

See the statement below from Lt. Governor Bill Bolling on Card Check. This is an issue we all need to talk to our friends about it cannot be allowed to pass.

Today, members of the United States Senate and House of
Representatives will introduce the Employee Free Choice Act, also known as
Card Check, which will effectively eliminate the secret ballot in votes to
unionize workplaces in Virginia and weaken businesses' ability to negotiate
with their employees. In response, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling issued
the following statement:

"Today, Congressional Democrats took a significant step toward weakening
businesses and jeopardizing jobs in Virginia by introducing the Employee
Free Choice Act, or Card Check. If Card Check is approved, it could make it
much easier for businesses to become unionized and it could take away one of
the most important rights that workers currently enjoy - the right to vote
in a secret ballot before their workplace can be unionized.
"The secret ballot has always been a very important part of elections in our
country. To take that right away from workers would be a terrible mistake
and it could result in widespread union activity unlike anything we have
seen in the past. In short, this is a horrible idea that will adversely
affect the ability of business to adapt to a changing economic environment,
to save existing jobs and to create desperately needed new jobs. This is
especially concerning given the challenges currently facing Virginia
business and industry.
"Introduction of Card Check comes on the heels of disturbing actions by
state Democrats to undermine Virginia's right-to-work law. In January, all
three candidates for Governor and two candidates for Lieutenant Governor
marched in a union picket line against the Crystal City Hilton hotel. That
march took place at the same time state and local officials were working to
recruit the Hilton Hotels national headquarters to Northern Virginia.
Additionally, during the recent General Assembly session, Senate Democrats
killed legislation to include the right-to-work in the Constitution of
Virginia.
"Clearly, the right-to-work and the ability of businesses to maintain and
create new jobs is under attack in Washington and Richmond. I feel that our
representatives in Congress and the citizens of Virginia should be fully
aware of the consequences of the Card Check legislation. I strongly
encourage Virginia's Senators and Congressmen to oppose this unfair, job
killing legislation."

Big Day on Monday

The 17th district race is starting to take some shape although I guarantee you we are not done. Monday at 2pm Gwen Mason announces for the Democrats and tonight Dave Trinkle sent out a message that he will not run. Trinkle appeared to be the favorite between the 2 candidates but has decided to get out of the race and put his support behind Mason (see poll on Starcity Harbinger). I still look for Richie Cranwell and Eric Thomas to challenge Mason.

On the GOP side at 4pm on Monday at his law offices (Grimes and Williams) on Elm Melvin Williams will announce his candidacy. I expect at least 2 other announcements this week for the GOP. Stay tuned.

Gwen Mason holding candidacy meeting today

From a trusted source within the Roanoke City GOP Executive Committee there is a meeting going on right now at Rupert Cutler's apartment about Gwen Mason's candidacy for the House of Delegates. Seen in attendance is the Roanoke City Democratic Vice Chair Bill Bestpitch. It will be interesting to see if she announces soon and if she votes for Rupert tomorrow to fill Alvin Nash's seat.
